Awarding the IDB US$ 100,000 Prize to NIGEB
Islamic Development Bank (IDB) has selected to award the Prize for Science & Technology in category "Institutions having achieved outstanding contribution on a given scientific discipline" to the National Institute of Science and Biotechnology (NIGEB), Tehran, I.R. Iran.
Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Ali, President of IDB congratulated Prof. Abbas Lotfi, General Director of NIGEB and hoped that the award of this prize will encourage more science and technology institutions in Islamic Republic of Iran to strive for achieving excellence on a formal letter received this week.
The Prize, which consists of a cash award of US$ 100,000, a trophy and a certificate, shall be presented to Prof. Lotfi by H.E. Chairman of the Board of Governors, in a special ceremony to be held on the occasion of the 36th IDB Board of Governors Meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia during 29-30 June 2011
The president of IDB has invited Prof. Lotfi to attend this ceremony as a VIP guest of the Bank and receive the above Prize on behalf of NIGEB.
The IDB Science and Technology Prizes scheme consists of three (3) prizes awarded on the occasion of the Annual Meeting of the IDB Board of Governors.
The Prizes are awarded only to institutions in IDB member countries in the following categories:
Outstanding scientific or technological contribution to the socio-economic development of a member country.
Outstanding contribution to any of the following scientific disciplines: Engineering Sciences; Agriculture; Medicine; Biotechnology; Information Technology; Optoelectronics; Material Sciences; Pharmaceutical Sciences; Industrial Microelectronics; alternative Energy Sources and Nanotechnology.
Noted scientific research institutions in the IDB Least Developed Member Countries (LDMCs).
The IDB Prizes for Science & Technology are expected to encourage merit institutions and to promote competition among S&T institutions; the prizes would further herald the commitment of the IDB to implement forward-looking policies and integrate advanced S&T applications in the overall development agenda of its member countries.
