Icahn School Scientist: Diet and Microbiota Roles in CRC Development

Professor. Sergio A. Lira from the Immunology Institute, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, delivered a lecture in NIGEB on 20 November 2018, on “the Impact of Diet and Microbiota on the Development of Colitis and Colon Cancer”. During the lecture, he explained how the bacterial imbalance or dysbiosis in the gut due to the dietary or environmental changes may cause colorectal cancer (CRC). He also briefly outlined the relationship between gut microbiota and the development of CRC as well as the potential mechanisms of microbiota involved in treatment of CRC. In the future, he declared, probiotics or targeting the microbiota will probably be a powerful weapon battling CRC. NIGEB’s faculties and students attended this conference.
