Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology (IAB)

The Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology (IAB) was launched in March 2014 by merging two active research departments of the NIGEB, (i.e. Plant Biotechnology Department and Animal and Marine Biotechnology Department). The IMB has 22 full-time faculty members, including 3 full professors, 4 associate professors, 12 assistant professors, 3 lecturers and 6 research assistants.

The research departments of this institute have achieved outstanding results in developing stress-tolerant strategic crops and production of biological products.

 

The research departments of the IAB include:

·         Plant Bioproducts

·         Plant Molecular Biotechnology

·         Animal Biotechnology

 

 

The faculty members of the IAB have effectively contributed to pave the way to solve the problems and meet the needs of the country through implementing the following mission-oriented projects and various research projects in the area of agricultural biotechnology:

 

v  Canola (Fungal resistance & Herbicide tolerance)

v  Citrus Canker Disease

v  Olive Biotechnology

v  Pistachio Biotechnology

v  Wheat Biotechnology

v  Sugar Beet (Viral disease; BNYVV)

 

In line with implementing its research projects, the IAB collaborates with other universities in the framework of internship or conducting M.Sc. theses and Ph.D. dissertations.

Furthermore, the IAB independently holds M.Sc. and Ph.D. courses in Agricultural Biotechnology and M.Sc. course in Cellular and Molecular Biology.

*      Study the metabolic routs in medicinal plants for production of metabolites with emphasis on Phenolic and polyphenolic compounds

*      Production of recombinant proteins in plants with emphasis on oral immunogens

*      Tissue culture and genetic engineering of crops, medicinal and ornamental plants

*      Construction of plant expression vectors
