Concept

 

The National Institute for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (NIGEB) established in 1989, is a state-operated research center offering solely research activities in the field of advanced molecular biology and biotechnology. As a national research center, NIGEB strives to promote applied and basic research in science and technology and to nurture accomplished individuals capable of pursuing R&D in those areas at universities, in private section and elsewhere.
NIGEB’s research teams, comprising the Medical Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, Animal and Marine Biotechnology, Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology and Basic Sciences, seek to promote technological development grounded in biological knowledge of each correspondence field. They also prepare students to meet career requirements in the various fields of the biological sciences.

 

CHRONOLOGY

October 1989   NIGEB Administrative Bureau established, Center’s library established.

April 1992   Research laboratories stated their activity, mainly performing research on Medical Biotechnology and Basic Sciences.

April 1998   Plant Biotechnology division established, Industrial Biotechnology division established, Center begins accepting students of affiliated universities.

April 1999   Animal and Marine Biotechnology division established, Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology team moved to a building in the new campus site in Chitgar.

  November 2000   Collaborative Ph.D. programs in "Cellular & Molecular Biology" and "Molecular Genetic" were established.

  March 2004   NIGEB moved to the main campus in Chitgar (17 km north Tehran)
